Mini-Camp Day One Quick Hitters

Several notes from the first day of mini-camp.

ALLEN PARK - At yesterday's session, their were four no-shows including Dan Wilkinson (expected), Boss Bailey (unexpected), Joey Harrington (expected), Jeff Backus (expected).

Marinelli would only say of Bailey intially, "I know where he is", but then later volunteered that all the missing players were excused from the entire camp. Jeff Backus got married and is on his honeymoon has learned.

He probably will not participate in any voluntary sessions until he has signed his franchise player tender. Backus is not pleased with the status of his contract negotiations.

According to the source he was promised a multi-year contract offer. He initally wanted a five-year deal but Detroit balked at that request according the source and were looking at something more in the two-to-three year range.

Detroit announced they signed safety Vernon Fox, center Brock Gutierrez, linebacker Nate Wayne and guard Tyrone Hopson to new contracts.

Five restricted free agents signed waivers and participated among them were Terrence Holt, Artose Pinner and Cory Redding.

It was a little unsettling to see Teddy Lehman still in tennis shoes and unable to do any work at all in this camp. Lehman likely will not be ready to work until at least this summer's training camp.

Detroit will receive a late visit from Carolina offensive lineman Tutan Reyes this week. Reyes, a durable solid starter during his tenure with the Panthers is still looking for a home and Detroit is still looking for a right guard. Damien Woody is expected to make the switch to the left guard position opposite Backus.

For all the predicted complaining on the part of Lions players, none of that was evident in the earlier sessions. Even the linebackers, who had to deal with the strictly demanding linebackers coach Phil Snow and his corse language appeared to really get into the session and feed off his energy.
