Notebook: Marinelli preaches responsibility

After incident involving DT Shaun Rogers, Lions head coach Rod Marinelli stressed name protection at a recent team off-season training activity. More inside, including a complete transaction log from the 2007 off-season.

  • Just a few hours after the incident with defensive tackle Shaun Rogers allegedly took place, the Lions held their last off-season practice. Coach Rod Marinelli gave his players a message: Protect your name, protect your parents' name and protect the Lions' name. "It's one, two, three," Marinelli said afterward. "It's that simple. I try to constantly remind them on the same verbiage. If we have a long weekend, a Memorial weekend, I try to say the same thing. Will it always work? No. But that's part of being a teacher. You say the lesson, say the lesson. You got six guys flunking, you say, 'God.' Then you've got to change your approach. Or change your words. Or change the guys."
  • Marinelli was to speak at a fundraiser at a Michigan community college July 15, along with two close friends who met in this year's Super Bowl -- Colts coach Tony Dungy and Bears coach Lovie Smith. Dungy grew up in Jackson, Mich., and his father was a professor at Jackson Community College. All proceeds from the event were to go to the Dr. Wilbur L. Dungy Endowed Chair in Science Fund at the school. Dungy hired Marinelli and Smith on his first NFL staff, at Tampa Bay in 1996. Dungy became the first black coach to win the Super Bowl when his Colts beat Smith's Bears in February.
  • The Lions continue to draw from their season-ending 39-31 victory at Dallas. They were 2-13, but they went on the road, fought to the finish and beat a playoff team. "They could have went Christmas shopping, and they didn't," Marinelli said. "And that's part of what you're looking for. And see now, that good feeling, when it hits a block, when it hits a loss, how do you respond? Where's the mental toughness? So within that chemistry, hopefully, is that toughness and consistency that I want to stay with. And we've got to take this approach right back into camp and now we start everything again right back from ground zero and rebuild it."
  • The Lions brought in cornerback Kelly Herndon for a visit. But Herndon, who had been cut by Seattle, signed with Tennessee.
