Insider Player Tidbits

TSX, our insider Lions' affiliate, breaks down several Lions' players following Sunday's loss to Buffalo, including quarterback Joey Harrington, linebacker Chris Claiborne, rookie defensive end Kalimba Edwards, wide receiver Bill Schroeder and others. Check out this extensive analysis now!

Chris Claiborne
MLB Chris Claiborne is continuing his run of big defensive plays in the final year of his Lions contract. Earlier this season he had interceptions in three consecutive games and he had a fumble recovery at the Buffalo 29-yard line in the final three minutes Sunday, giving the Lions an opportunity they could not convert in a 24-17 loss. With seven tackles against the Bills, Claiborne pushed his team-leading tackle total to 67 in seven games.

Kalimba Edwards
DE Kalimba Edwards, the Lions' second-round pick in the 2002 NFL draft, is working his way into a more productive role for the Lions. In strictly parttime duty in the first seven games he has 10 tackles, including 2.5 quarterback sacks. He had an outright sack against Buffalo quarterback Drew Bledsoe and shared another with DT Luther Elliss in the Lions' 24-17 loss Sunday.

Bill Schroeder
WR Bill Schroeder eased his way back into the lineup after his third injury of the season with two catches for 26 yards in the Lions' 24-17 loss Sunday to the Buffalo Bills. Schroeder survived the game without suffering a recurrence of the ribs, ankle and hamstring injuries that have cost him playing time in five of the Lions seven games this season. When he's healthy, he gives the Lions a much-needed speed/size combination that's essential to the passing game.

Joey Harrington
QB Joey Harrington might be hitting the mid-season doldrums that so many rookies go through. In his fifth game as the Lions starting QB, he hit a season low in effectiveness, completing 20 of 42 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. His passer rating for the game 59.5 and for the fourth consecutive game his second half performance dropped off. In the first half he completed 11 of 21 (52.3 percent) for 120 yards, 1 TD, 1 interception and a 65.6 passer rating; in the second half he was 9 for 21 passing (42.9 percent) and 79 yards, with a 53.0 passer rating.

More Harrington ...
QB Joey Harrington had his least effective game in four weeks but still had the Lions within one play of overtime in their 24-17 loss Sunday to the Buffalo Bills. Harrington completed just 20 of 42 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown (23 yards to Az-Zahir Hakim) and was intercepted on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half. Harrington's only worse performance was his 15-for-35 game against Green Bay in his NFL debut as a starter on Sept. 22.

Desmond Howard
PR/KOR Desmond Howard, who has been hampered already this season by neck and hand injuries, suffered a rib injury Sunday in the Lions 24-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Howard returned four kicks for 68 yards (with a long of 25) and had one fair catch on a punt return before leaving the game in the second half.

Todd Lyght
CB Todd Lyght is no stranger to Lions coverage demands. Earlier this season he was responsible for Vikings WR Randy Moss and did a creditable job, although the Lions ended up losing the game. In the Lions 24-17 loss Sunday to the Buffalo Bills, Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe and WR Eric Moulds worked him over for nine receptions and 123 yards.
