Report: Lions' Pires out as LB coach has learned that Lions' linebacker coach Glenn Pires has been fired, although there has been no official comment from team officials. Pires previously served as a recruiting coordinator for Michigan State Spartans, a position he might re-assume.

Lions' linebacker coach Glenn Pires was reportedly informed by coach Marty Mornhinweg that he will not be retained in that position, has learned.

Pires is a seven-year NFL veteran, starting his career with the Arizona Cardinals. The Lions' defense ranked second-to-last in total defense for the 2002 season, allowing 382 yards per contest to opposing offenses, and committing 114 penalties.

The Lions front office has yet to comment on the report.

Pires also was on staff at Michigan State and served as recruiting coordinator. Pires could be back in the mix for MSU since new coach John L. Smith has not named a recruiting coordinator for his staff as yet.

Detroit is on the lookout for a new linebackers coach.
