(ALLEN PARK, MI) -- The coaching staff shuffle continues in Allen Park. Former Denver Broncos coach George Dyer will join the Lions staff as their defensive line coach. Dyer will work with Charles Hayley, who will move back to pass rushing specialist. Current defensive line coach John Marshall will move over to coach the linebackers, replacing the fired Glenn Pires.
Sherman Lewis is a candidate to take over the wide receivers. Lewis was a special assistant. Detroit has had trouble attracting candidates for the vacant coaching job since head coach Marty Mornhinweg has only one year remaining on his current contract.
After the San Francisco 49'ers 31-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Steve Mariucci is expected to meet with 49ers' team owner John York to discuss his future. If Mariucci is fired, he would be a strong candidate for several open jobs around the NFL including Jacksonville and Cincinnati. It is believed that Detroit would also be interested in Mariucci despite president Matt Millen's promise to make no changes.
However, sources from the Bay Area have told me that Mariucci will not be fired. The only decision that will be made is whether he will receive a contract extension to his liking or if he will coach the final year of his contract -- like Mornhinweg -- as a lame duck.
