Millen releases statement on Mariucci visit

Lions' Vice President and Chief Executive Matt Millen released a statement today regarding former 49ers' head coach Steve Mariucci's visit to Detroit. Millen did not comment on any possible contract negotiations.

Lions' Vice President and Chief Executive Matt Millen officially confirmed reports today that former 49ers' head coach Steve Mariucci visited the team on Thursday.

He did not, however, comment on any contract negotiations that may have been involved.

"Steve Mariucci arrived in town last night to discuss our head coaching vacancy," said Millen in a statement.

"We had an excellent meeting with Bill Ford Wednesday evening and we also gave Steve a tour of Ford Field.

"Steve spent most of today at our Allen Park facility.  He is now on his way back to the West Coast.  Steve and I will continue to discuss this opportunity over the next few days."

Mariucci is believed to be the front-runner for the head coaching vacancy, which has forced possible candidates -- including LSU head coach Nick Saban and former Vikings' head coach Dennis Green -- to withdraw their names from consideration.
