Voice of the Fan: Mock draft

The 2003 NFL Draft is two weeks away as I write this. There is certain to be some maneuvering in this draft as teams will move up and down. Also, free agent signings will play a factor into what positions team will want to draft. Based on the current staus of the 1st round, here we go.<p>

1) Cincinnati Bengals - QB Carson Palmer...USC

The Bengals have some choices here. They can trade down and get some extra picks. But in the end, Marvin Lewis will opt for a franchise QB. The team has been burned in the past with QB picks like Akili Smith and David Klingler, but Palmer looks like the real deal.

2) Detroit Lions - WR Charles Rogers...Michigan State

This is a no brainer. The Lions desperately need help at WR. They already have a franchise QB in Joey Harrington. Rogers is the best WR out there, and he is also a local product whose former coach at MSU is now on the Lions coaching staff.

3) Houston Texans - WR Andre Johnson...Miami (Fla.)

The Texans have some choices here as well. They can trade down or pick between the likes of OT Jordan Gross , DE Terrell Suggs or Johnson. In the end they will choose Johnson, who will give franchise QB David Carr a nice weapon.

4) Chicago Bears - DE Terrell Suggs...Arizona State

The Bears will think about a QB here. But they did sign Kordell Stewart in the off season and they can still get a good QB in round two. Head Coach Dick Jauron is a defensive minded coach and he will gladly take Suggs.

5) Dallas Cowboys - CB Terrence Newman...Kansas State

The Cowboys will also contemplate taking a QB here. But new Head Coach Bill Parcells loves defense. The Boys were very happy with S Roy Williams last year, and they will be equally as delighted with Newman, who is an exceptional corner that can also help the return game.

6) Arizona Cardinals - DT Jimmy Kennedy...Penn State

The Cardinals will join the club and consider a QB. But the thought of Kennedy and DT Wendell Bryant playing next to each other will help make the Cardinals a much better defense.

7) Minnesota Vikings - CB Marcus Trufant...Washington State

The Vikings will continue to help the defense with this pick. They signed DB Denard Walker in free agency, and the selection of Trufant will really help to solidify the secondary.

8) Jacksonville Jaguars - OT Jordan Gross...Utah

The Jags know a thing or two about selecting great offensive tackles. Tony Boselli was a stud until injuries set in, and Gross is clearly the best OT in this draft. The Jags also need help here as the lost offensive linemen in free agency.

9) Carolina Panthers - QB Byron Leftwich... Marshall

The Panthers were hoping that Gross would fall to them. QB Jake Delhomme was signed as a free agent, but Leftwich is too good to pass up.

10) Baltimore Ravens - QB Kyle Boller... California

The Ravens are thrilled to get Boller here, although they might prefer Leftwich. The team needs a QB as Jeff Blake left in free agency and Chris Redman was hurt last year.

11) Seattle Seahawks - DT Dewayne Robertson...Kentucky

The Hawks have needs just about everywhere on defense. New GM Bob Ferguson will pick defense early. The Seahawks are undersized at DT with John Randle and Chad Eaton. Robertson will add some size and power.

12) St. Louis Rams - OL John Steinbach... Iowa

The Rams offensive line really let them down last year. They have helped themselves in free agency adding OG David Loverne and C Dave Wohlabaugh, but John St. Claire really struggled at RT, and that area needs an upgrade.

13) New York Jets - LB Boss Bailey...Georgia

Head Coach Herm Edwards would love to add Bailey and his speed to the defense. Edwards worked with a similar type of athlete in Tampa Bay...Derrick Brooks. If Bailey even comes close to being like Brooks, the Jets will be very pleased.

14) New England Patriots - DE Jerome McDougle...Miami (Fla.)

Head Coach Bill Belichick would absolutely love to have a DL with the likes of McDougle and Richard Seymour.

15) San Diego Chargers - DT William Joseph...Miami (Fla.)

The Chargers could look at S here as they lost Rodney Harrison. They also could use some help on the DL and that is where the Lightning Bolts will add some youth.

16) Kansas City Chiefs - CB Andre Woolfolk...Oklahoma

The Chiefs would have looked at some DL help here had they not signed Vonnie Holliday. The team was lit up like a Christmas tree at CB last year, so this pick makes sense.

17) New Orleans Saints - LB E. J. Henderson...Maryland

The Saints are looking to upgrade the defense in this draft. Henderson is a nice start, but the Saints aren't done.

18) New Orleans Saints - S Mike Doss...Ohio State

Most mock drafts have Doss going later than this pick. The Saints desperately need S help and Doss is the top rated safety out there.

19) New England Patriots - RB Larry Johnson...Penn State

The Pats helped themselves on defense with their first pick, and now it is time to help the offense.

20) Denver Broncos - DE Michael Haynes...Penn State

Back to back Nittany Lions are drafted. Haynes gives the Broncos what they desperately need...a top flight DE that can pressure the QB.

21) Cleveland Browns - OT Kwame Harris...Stanford

The Browns number one need is help on the OL. Harris will provide an anchor at RT for years to come.

22) New York Jets - WR Taylor Jacobs...Florida

The Jets have to replace WR Laveranues Coles. Jacobs is the best available WR and he can be a big play threat.

23) Buffalo Bills - DT Kevin Williams...Oklahoma State

Even though the Bills signed DT Sam Adams in free agency, the team still needs depth and youth in the interior of their defensive line.

24) Indianapolis Colts - CB Dennis Weathersby...Oregon State

The Colts will keep on shoring up their defense. They need help at corner as Tony Dungy continues to get the defense better players.

25) New York Giants - DT Jonathan Sullivan...Georgia

The G men need some help at DT with Keith Hamilton coming off an achilles tendon injury. Sullivan is just what the doctor ordered.

26) San Francisco 49ers - DT Rien Long...Washington State

The Niners would appear to be set at DT with Bryant Young and Dana Stubblefield. But both are getting long in the tooth, and new Head Coach Dennis Erickson knows all about Long after coaching against him in the Pac 10.

27) Pittsburgh Steelers - S Troy Polamalu...USC

The Steelers need help in the secondary, especially from a speed standpoint at safety. Polamalu is fast, but he can also be very physical. Some say he is the best safety at USC since Ronnie Lott. That is saying a lot. (no pun intended)

28) Tennessee Titans - WR Kelley Washington...Tennessee

The Titans need help at WR and Washington is a local product that will give the offense another threat.

29) Green Bay Packers - LB Terry Pierce...Kansas State

Some have the Packers taking a QB here. The Packers believe that Brett Favre will play for at least two more years, so a QB can be taken later. The Pack desperately needs help at linebacker from both a talent and depth standpoint. Pierce will give the Packers an inside presence that they haven't had in a couple of years.

30) Philadelphia Eagles - DE Chris Kelsay...Nebraska

The loss of DE Hugh Douglas makes this a logical pick, although the Birds will contemplate LB Gerald Hayes. Either way, look for defense. Kelsay is a great value here as well.

31) Oakland Raiders - DE Kenny Patterson...Ohio State

The Raiders have back to back picks because of the Jon Gruden deal. The Raiders will start at DE, where the team had a lot of injuries last year.

32) Oakland Raiders - OL Vince Manuwai...Hawaii

The Raiders need help at both G and C, and Manuwai can play both.

Complete

Packer Mock Draft

1) LB Terry Pierce...Kansas State - A perfect fit for the Pack.

3) LB Victor Hobson...Michigan - More depth added at LB.

4) QB Drew Henson...Michigan - Mike Sherman rolls the dice a little here. Henson has been so so in baseball in the Yankees' organization, but he is a franchise type of QB if he plays football.

5) OT Todd Williams...Florida State - More depth at the OT position.

6) WR Chris Vance...Ohio State - Has terrific hands and blocks well. Also makes big plays.

6) TE Doug Ziegler...Mississippi - Has had some injury problems but is perfect for the west coast offense.

6) S Terrence Kiel...Texas A&M - Mike Sherman loves guys from A&M and the Pack needs depth at safety.

7) DT Tim Love...Harding - Needs lots of polish but has great ability. Could be another Cletidus Hunt.

7) DL Jake Sprague...Wisconsin - Could be like Aaron Kampman and play both DE and DT.

7) CB B.J. Tucker...Wisconsin - 4.3 speed is tough to teach. Had a solid senior season with 5 picks.

7) LB Eddie Strong...Mississippi - Another LB that can add depth.
