Murphy, the Packers' president and chief executive officer since 2008, played eight seasons as a defensive back with the Washington Redskins (1977 through 1984), including two Super Bowl appearances and a selection to the Pro Bowl following the 1983 season.
Since assuming his executive role with Green Bay, he has served as a member of the NFL's Management Council Executive Committee and the NFL Youth Football Committee.
Murphy will become the first Packers representative to be included on the Competition Committee since former coach Mike Holmgren, who served from 1995 through 1999.
"I was excited and honored to learn that I've been selected to the Competition Committee," Murphy said. "It will be a new experience for me, and I am looking forward to representing the Packers in this capacity on a league level."
In addition to Murphy, the NFL announced that head coaches Jeff Fisher of the St. Louis Rams and Ken Whisenhunt of the Arizona Cardinals were added. The Competition Committee studies all aspects of the game and recommends rules and policy changes to NFL clubs.
Fisher co-chaired the committee from 2002 through 2010 with current committee chairman Rich McCay of the Falcons. Whisenhunt has served as a member of the Coaches Subcommittee, which consists of current and former NFL head coaches and makes recommendations to the Competition Committee.
The other members: Stephen Jones, Dallas Cowboys; Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals; John Mara, New York Giants; Ozzie Newsome, Baltimore Ravens; and Rick Smith, Houston Texans.
Murphy also is a member of the Subcommittee on College Relations.
