Bishop's Surgery; Players Returning

No determination has been made on Desmond Bishop returning this season. Meanwhile, Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finley and John Kuhn are expected to practice on Sunday, as is new running back Cedric Benson.

Desmond Bishop had surgery on his injured hamstring on Friday morning, according to coach Mike McCarthy, who added that no determination has been made on whether Bishop might return to action this season.

Despite missing three games with a calf injury last season, Bishop led the team in tackles (142) and was second in sacks (five) and forced fumbles (two).

In Bishop's place, D.J. Smith recorded six tackles and a quarterback hit against Cleveland. He'll be the every-down inside linebacker, staying on the field rather than A.J. Hawk in the six-defensive-back dime package.

In other injury news:

— Receiver Greg Jennings has been cleared to return after sustaining a concussion on his touchdown catch on Family Night, and Jermichael Finley will return after missing the two preseason games with an injured quad.

Could they play next week at Cincinnati, which is sort of a big deal as the third preseason game is the so-called "dress rehearsal" for the regular season?

"We have to see Greg on the field and see Jermichael on the field and go through the week of preparation and, frankly, see where they are as far as the rep count," McCarthy said. "I would say as I stand here today, I don't know if they would go the full rep count as the other players, but I could be proven wrong. We'll let the week determine that."

— The backfield will have some extra bodies, which will be appreciated by Alex Green and, especially, Marc Tyler. Newly acquired running back Cedric Benson will be full-go for Sunday's padded practice. Plus, fullback John Kuhn will be back after missing the game with a sprained ankle. Brandon Saine, who's missed both preseason games, will need another week as he recovers from a "pretty good" hamstring pull. McCarthy didn't mention James Starks (turf toe).
