Amid reports and speculation of the Vikings looking to trade Percy Harvin, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman shot down those rumors Friday.
"We have no intent of trading Percy Harvin. Percy Harvin is under contract and we expect him, just like all of our players under contract, to be here," Spielman said in a roundtable session with reporters Friday before heading for the NFL Scouting Combine next week. "He is a very good football player but he knows what he does for our football team."
Harvin led the Vikings last year with 62 catches for 677 yards and was their leading kickoff returner, averaging 35.9 yards on 16 returns.
However, his season ended early. He was placed on injured reserve after suffering ligament damage in his left ankle. He didn't play in the final seven games of the season.
Reports have also indicated Harvin is considering holding out if he doesn't have a contract extension before training camp starts in late July. Harvin is in the final year of his rookie deal and scheduled to make $2.9 million.
"I'm not going to get into hypotheticals. … We expect all our players under contract to be here," Spielman said.
A report on Friday said that Harvin was unhappy with the Vikings offense (during the season Harvin said he thought there was more clarity needed on players' roles in the offense and said that had gotten better).
Harvin was the league's leading receiver through the first half of the season, and Spielman expressed confidence in offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave.
"I know Bill Musgrave does a great job I think trying to get Percy the ball in his hands," Spielman said. "But I'll leave that between the coaches and Percy. That's something that's between coach and Percy."
Although Harvin returned to Florida after his injury and didn't do his rehabilitation in Minnesota, Spielman said Harvin returned for his season-ending physical and passed that in January.
Spielman said he has spoken with Harvin's agent, Joel Segal, and other Vikings officials have talked to Harvin to make sure they know the Vikings' intentions.
"I know there's a lot of sources, there's a lot of rumor. There's so much stuff flying out there this time of year that comes from everywhere," Spielman said. "… I would just say don't believe all the half-truths or the rumors or the no-truths that are out there because there is so much stuff that flies around."
