Burnett's Deal Leaves Team $14.7M Under Cap

Talk of a contract extension began late last season and continued at the Scouting Combine in February. He has cap charges ranging from $3.19 million for this season to $7 million in 2017.

Morgan Burnett's contract extension, which will keep him with the Green Bay Packers through 2017, leaves the team $14,677,631 below the salary cap, according to a source with access to salary data.

Burnett's $24.75 million deal includes an $8.25 million signing bonus. According to a separate source, Burnett's agent, Kevin Conner, began talking to the Packers late last season and again at the Scouting Combine in February. Once talks turned serious, things fell quickly into place.

Burnett is viewed as an ascending player. He's just 24 and ranks among the league's top safeties in tackles, forced fumbles and passes defensed over the past two seasons. He was one of two defensive players who played every snap last season.

He'll earn a $1.323 million base salary in 2013, which falls to $1.15 million in 2014 (offset by a $1.5 million roster bonus to be paid on the fifth day of the league year) before increasing to $2.9 million in 2015, $3.8 million in 2016 and $4.75 million in 2017.

Burnett has cap charges of $3.19 million in 2013, $4.9 million in 2014, $5.15 million in 2015, $6.05 million in 2016 and $7 million in 2017.

From 2014 through 2017, Burnett will earn $300,000 workout bonuses as well as $300,000 roster bonuses paid in $18,750 installments for each game on the active roster.

The Packers have a decent amount of cap space, which will come in handy considering the upcoming free agents. Key players whose contracts will expire after the upcoming season include Jermichael Finley, Ryan Pickett, B.J. Raji, Sam Shields, James Jones, Evan Dietrich-Smith, John Kuhn, Mike Neal, Marshall Newhouse and Andrew Quarless.
