Tuesday’s Training Camp Medical Report

The Packers suffer a major blow to their offensive line depth with Don Barclay's knee injury.

The Green Bay Packers’ offensive line was thrown for a major loss on Tuesday after Don Barclay sustained a serious knee injury.

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the injury is a torn ACL.

Barclay, a versatile backup who started 14 games at right tackle last season, was playing right tackle during an 11-on-11 period. Trying to hold off a bull rush from rookie outside linebacker Adrian Hubbard, Barclay’s right knee buckled. He immediately grasped the knee and spent about 5 minutes on the ground being examined by trainers. He was helped to a cart by guard T.J. Lang and defensive lineman Josh Boyd and was given words of encouragement by several of his teammates – including tight end Andrew Quarless and defensive lineman Jerel Worthy, who sustained season-ending knee injuries in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Coach Mike McCarthy said he wouldn’t know any specifics about the injury until “probably” Tuesday night.

“You don’t want to see anybody get hurt, so we’ll really wait to see exactly what we’re dealing with here,” McCarthy said. “But Donny, they don’t come any better than him. He’s exactly what you’re looking for. If you want someone to emulate what a Green Bay Packer football player is on and off the field, he’s definitely one of your guys. I just hope it’s not serious.”

Barclay would have entered the season as the backup at right tackle and both guard spots.

“He’s a guy who’s played a lot of football,” Lang said. “He’s got a lot of starts under his belt, a lot of experience. He’s doing a lot of good things for us. He’s a guy who’s been competing all year and he’s a guy who can play multiple positions and play ‘em well. We’re hoping for the best and we hope he can come back soon.”

Without Barclay, Derek Sherrod probably becomes the No. 1 backup tackle – Sherrod has taken all of his 11-on-11 snaps at left tackle -- with Lane Taylor now in position to be the backup at the guard spots.

“That’d be tough. Hopefully, that’s not the case,” guard Josh Sitton said. “But he adds a ton of value to this line. You typically don’t get a sixth guy that can play that many positions and has had that much experience with 20 games or so started. That will be a big one if he’s down but, hopefully, it’s nothing too serious.”

New injuries: T/G Don Barclay (knee).

Old injuries: RB Michael Hill (concussion), S Tanner Miller (ankle), S Morgan Burnett (oblique), TE Colt Lyerla (leg), WR Jared Abbrederis (knee), DT Letroy Guion (hamstring), DE Jerel Worthy (back).

Returned from injury: ILB Brad Jones (undisclosed).
