Coach Mike McCarthy said his concern “is higher” for Burnett than it was on Wednesday. How Burnett feels on Saturday, when the team returns to the practice field for its final workout before Sunday night’s game, will determine the safety’s availability for the game at high-powered New Orleans.
At least the depth is better at safety. Last week, rookie HaHa Clinton-Dix supplanted second-year pro Micah Hyde in the starting lineup. Without Burnett, Clinton-Dix and Hyde would presumably be the tandem. Hyde, however, has been the dime defender throughout the season. If Hyde has to play safety, Jarrett Bush would play the dime.
“We feel very good about our depth,” McCarthy said. “I can’t say enough about the way the guys stepped up last week. Everybody’s practicing, everybody’s contributing and everybody’s looking for an opportunity. So Micah’s done a lot of good things. HaHa had an excellent practice today. Jarrett Bush is always ready to go as far as the dime and things like that. And Sean Richardson is playing extremely well on special teams and he’s looking for an opportunity (on defense) also. Sean had the big stop in there on third down against Carolina last week.”
The Saints’ injury report was unchanged from Wednesday.
