Special Teams Rankings

How big of a concern are Green Bay's special-teams units? This chart shows the tale of the tape in the five key categories of the kicking game. (Jeff Hanisch/USA TODAY)

The following chart shows Packer Report’s special teams rankings, through Week 15 of the NFL season.

The rankings take into account what we call the five core facets of special teams. For kickoff, kickoff return and punt and punt return, what matters is field position, not the length of kicks or return averages. So, for kickoffs and kickoff returns, rankings are based on starting field position; for punts and punt returns, rankings are based on net averages. The fifth category is field-goal accuracy.

Column 1 is average starting field position after a kickoff return. Column 2 is net punting average. Column 3 is the opponents’ average starting field position after a kickoff. Column 4 is the opponents’ net punting average. Column 5 is field-goal accuracy. The final column shows the average ranking in those categories.
