The Green Bay Packers ruled out eight players for Thursday night's preseason game against New Orleans at Lambeau Field.
That list, however, includes only players who are injured. They are receiver Randall Cobb (shoulder), defensive back Micah Hyde (neck), cornerback Demetri Goodson (knee), linebacker Sam Barrington (ankle), guard T.J. Lang (concussion), receiver Ty Montgomery (hamstring) and defensive end Datone Jones (knee). A late scratch was safety Morgan Burnett with a minor calf injury.
Most of the starters, however, are not expected to play as the team tries to sort out its remaining roster battles while protecting its key performers for the regular season. That more extensive list of players who are not expected includes Aaron Rodgers, who took only scout-team reps during Tuesday's practice. For Rodgers, who did not play against Philadelphia on Saturday, that means he will have gone exactly three weeks before game action when the Packers face the Bears in Week 1 at Chicago.
Rodgers threw 24 passes in two preseason games -- 19 against New England and five against Pittsburgh. He also played in two preseason games last year, throwing a total of 33 passes in the second and third games. He threw 24 passes in three preseason games in 2013.
Based on pregame warmups, running back Eddie Lacy, receiver Davante Adams, offensive linemen Bryan Bulaga, David Bakhtiari and Josh Sitton, nose tackle B.J. Raji, linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers, and cornerbacks Casey Hayward and Sam Shields are healthy starters who will not play tonight.
Update: The only starters playing the opening series were defensive linemen Mike Daniels and Letroy Guion. On offense, tight end Andrew Quarless played the opening series. Center Corey Linsley and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix were in uniform but did not play.
