A Look at the Packers’ ‘Final’ Roster

The Packers got down to the 53-man limit on Saturday. Who was cut, who remains and what does it mean?

Here is a look at the subject-to-change 53-man roster set by the Green Bay Packers on Saturday. It includes 25 on offense, 25 on defense and three specialists.

Quarterbacks (3): Aaron Rodgers, Scott Tolzien, Brett Hundley. Cut (0): None. Noteworthy: For the third consecutive season, the Packers will take three quarterbacks into the regular season.

Running backs (5): Eddie Lacy, James Starks, Alonzo Harris; John Kuhn, Aaron Ripkowski. Cut (2): Rajion Neal, John Crockett. Noteworthy: The Packers went with a one-handed Harris over the productive Neal and promising Crockett. Neal consistently worked ahead of Harris and Crockett but his fumble in the preseason finale didn’t help.

Wide receivers (5): Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis, Myles White. Cut (3): Jared Abbrederis, Ed Williams, Larry Pinkard. Noteworthy: If you throw names and draft status out of the question, going with White over Abbrederis was a no-brainer. White finished third in the NFL with 16 catches in the preseason. Abbrederis missed 15 of 17 training camp practices.

Tight ends (3): Richard Rodgers, Andrew Quarless, Kennard Backman. Cut (2): Mitchell Henry, Justin Perillo. Noteworthy: In a not-so-heated battle, the Packers went with the sixth-round draft pick over Henry and Perillo, both of whom had their camps slowed by injuries. They had at least four tight ends on the Week 1 roster in each of the past five seasons.

Offensive line (9): David Bakhtiari, Josh Sitton, Corey Linsley, T.J. Lang, Bryan Bulaga, Don Barclay, J.C. Tretter, Josh Walker, Lane Taylor. Cut (4): Jeremy Vujnovich, Garth Gerhart, Matt Rotheram, Andy Phillips. Noteworthy: Nine linemen is a lot. They had just seven to open 2012 but a whopping 10 in 2010.

Defensive line (5): Mike Daniels, B.J. Raji, Mike Pennel, Josh Boyd, Bruce Gaston (Letroy Guion and Datone Jones are suspended and don’t count on the 53). Cut (2): Khyri Thornton, Christian Ringo. Noteworthy: Presumably, either Boyd or Gaston will be released once Guion and Jones return from their suspensions. Ringo was the only draft pick who failed to make the team.

Outside linebackers (5): Julius Peppers, Mike Neal, Nick Perry, Andy Mulumba, Jayrone Elliott. Cut (2): Jermauria Rasco, James Vaughters. Noteworthy: The depth looks good, based on Mulumba’s return from a torn ACL and Elliott’s closing statement to the preseason.

Inside linebackers (4): Clay Matthews, Sam Barrington, Jake Ryan, Nate Palmer. Cut (2): Carl Bradford, Joe Thomas. Noteworthy: The Packers will be banking on rapid growth from Palmer once the club cast is gone and Ryan as he gains experience. One of the two will have to play inside linebacker when Matthews moves to the line of scrimmage.

Cornerbacks (7): Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, LaDarius Gunter, Demetri Goodson. Cut (2): Tay Glover-Wright, Ryan White. Noteworthy: Gunter joins Harris as the only undrafted rookies to make the team. With the veterans sitting out Thursday’s preseason finale, Randall and Gunter started and Rollins entered in nickel situations.

Safeties (4): Morgan Burnett, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Sean Richardson, Chris Banjo. Cut (1): Jean Fanor. Noteworthy: The Packers didn’t add a single safety during the offseason so they’ll take into 2015 the same group with which it ended 2014.

Specialists (3): Mason Crosby, Tim Masthay, Brett Goode. Cut (0): None. Noteworthy: Masthay’s strong finish to the preseason solidified his spot on the roster.
