Cobb Returns as Packers Begin Bears Week

Only safety Morgan Burnett did not participate in Wednesday's practice for the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy was hopeful all of his players would practice on Wednesday.

He almost got what he wanted.

Only safety Morgan Burnett didn’t participate in practice as the Packers started their on-the-field prep for their Week 1 game at Chicago. His status will be updated after practice. Receiver Randall Cobb was among the injured players who returned. Cobb went through individual drills, caught passes from a JUGS machine during a special-teams period and also fielded punts during a punt-return drill before media had to leave practice.

Also back for the Packers were safety Micah Hyde (neck), guard T.J. Lang (concussion) and receiver Ty Montgomery (hamstring). None of those players played in the preseason finale against the Saints. Plus, linebacker Nate Palmer and running back Alonzo Harris practiced without their protective club casts. That’s especially noteworthy for Palmer, who projects as the inside linebacker who replaces Clay Matthews when Matthews becomes a line-of-scrimmage defender.

The team’s good health is allowing coach Mike McCarthy to turn his full focus to the Bears, who have a new coaching staff led by John Fox.

“I feel good where we are,” McCarthy said before practice. “This is the first step. Every year is different, every football team’s different, every challenge this time of year is different. It’s clearly, I think that these are the most difficult games to win early in the season because of the unknowns. The average is 30 percent unscouted looks occur in the opening game. So those are the things that we’re focusing on, the challenges that are in front of us with Chicago, playing down there. I have to get out there and check the surface. We’ve got young players that are going to be playing in this rivalry for the first time. So, we’re just really focused on the education and preparation of what it takes to win a game at Chicago.”
