Update: The Packers downgraded receiver Davante Adams and safety Morgan Burnett to doubtful for Sunday's game at San Francisco.

Assuming Adams won't play, and with tight end Andrew Quarless on short-term injured reserve, the Packers were down to six healthy receivers and tight ends. To provide some depth, receiver Jared Abbrederis was promoted to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. To make room, the Packers released defensive lineman Bruce Gaston. Gaston's release leaves five defensive linemen. That list includes Letroy Guion, who is back following a three-game suspension.

Last week at Kansas City, rookie Ty Montgomery took most of Adams' snaps at receiver, and they'll likely proceed in the same fashion vs. the 49ers. Without Burnett, Micah Hyde likely will make his second consecutive start and third in four games at safety. In passing situations, first-round pick Damarious Randall probably will enter at cornerback with cornerback Casey Hayward moving into the slot. That's how the Packers proceeded without Burnett against Chicago and Kansas City, though second-round cornerback Quinten Rollins saw some action during the fourth quarter of last week's game instead of Randall.

Friday's story: Davante Adams jogged through the Green Bay Packers locker room and juked a row of bags that were packed for Sunday’s game at San Francisco.

Adams will be making the trip but, based on his limp through a locker room free of defensive players, he might not be playing the 49ers.

Coach Mike McCarthy said as much on Friday morning, giving Adams only a “slight” chance of playing due to an ankle sprained two weeks ago against Seattle and aggravated on the opening series of last week’s game against Kansas City. Later, he listed Adams as questionable on the injury report.

“He’s going to have to jump around tomorrow, jump through some hoops,” McCarthy said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

The injury has been part of a frustrating start for the second-year receiver. After a strong finish to his rookie season and a strong training camp, big things were expected from Adams. Instead, he enters this week with nine catches for 82 yards – and a bum wheel that has sidelined him for about five of the 12 quarters.

“Obviously, if I’m going to sit out, then it’s going to be in pain,” Adams said on Friday. “Yeah, it was painful, but just trying to be smart about it for the most part.”

Without Adams, rookie Ty Montgomery figures to make his first NFL start. He’s caught all six passes thrown his way for 51 yards and one touchdown.

“Ty’s doing well,” said veteran receiver James Jones, who has more than picked up the slack with 12 receptions for 219 yards and four touchdowns. “I think the main thing with Ty is he just puts in a lot of film study. He asks a lot of questions, whether it’s to the quarterbacks, whether it’s to the coaches, whether it’s to us. He asks a lot of questions, studies a lot of film, and he wants to get better. And I think you can see that every week, he’s getting better and better, and he’s starting to play a lot faster because he understands what the guys want from him.”

McCarthy gave safety Morgan Burnett a better chance of playing. He missed the Week 1 and Week 3 games with an injured calf. He didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday, so there’s a pretty good chance he won’t suit up Sunday. Burnett also is questionable.

For San Francisco, tight end Vernon Davis is doubtful.
