Packers LB Clay Matthews Relieved To Have Dodged Bullet

Clay Matthews called the injury sustained at Denver "pretty scary."

Star Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews is happy with how his injured ankle and knee are recovering.

He’s happier still that he dodged a more significant injury.

During the third quarter of Sunday night’s loss at Denver, Packers cornerback Damarious Randall made a tackle on a completed pass to Andre Caldwell, then rolled backward – right onto Matthews’s ankle as he pursued the action.

“It's feeling good. I'm making progress,” Matthews said after Thursday’s practice, when he was listed as limited participation for a second consecution day. “I think as you guys saw from the video and how it happened, it was pretty scary for me. Dealing with a little swelling and all that. But I'm hoping that it keeps progressing, moving in the right direction. I'm happy with the progress that was made over these past few days so hopefully come Sunday it shouldn't be too much of an issue.”

Having a close-to-full-speed Matthews will be a critical element for the Packers against the undefeated Carolina Panthers. Two plays after the injury, the Broncos’ C.J. Anderson busted loose for a 28-yard touchdown that put the game away. The Broncos’ running game, however, isn’t in the same class as Carolina’s ground attack, which leads the NFL in attempts per game and yards per game.

“We've got to brace for the run game,” Matthews said. “They're obviously undefeated for a reason and doing it the right way. They're having success running the ball. (Jonathan) Stewart's a tough back to get down as well as (Mike) Tolbert. Cam can get those first downs, very similar to other mobile quarterbacks in this league when it's third-and-short."

Also limited for a second consecutive day was receiver Ty Montgomery, who is recovering from an ankle injury sustained before the bye. He steered clear of making any prediction on whether he’d be ready for the Panthers.

“It sucks. I don’t know, man. I could probably explain this multiple ways, but it sucks,” he said. “I feel like I’m not out there earning what I’m supposed to be getting paid. I feel like they brought me here to do something, and I’m not able to do it right now. It’s just the competitor in me. I just want to be out there.”
