Packers Downgrade Shields to Doubtful

Ty Montgomery is doubtful now, too, and Mike Neal was added to the report and listed as questionable.

The Green Bay Packers made numerous changes to their injury report on Saturday, including downgrading cornerback Sam Shields to doubtful and adding outside linebacker Mike Neal as questionable ahead of Sunday's big game at Carolina.

Along with Shields (shoulder), cornerback Quinten Rollins (neck) and receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) were downgraded to doubtful.

Coach Mike McCarthy spoke with relative optimism about Shields and Montgomery on Friday.

“Sam’s a veteran,” coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday morning. “I would say I would not need him to participate tomorrow because we have history together. But there’s hoops you’ve got to jump through and he has not done that yet, so it’s clearly in the hands on the medical team right now.”

If Shields doesn’t play, first-round pick Damarious Randall will move into the starting lineup. The No. 4 corner last week at Denver was Demetri Goodson rather than LaDarius Gunter, but the Packers might not need a fourth corner against the run-heavy Panthers. Without Montgomery, Jared Abbrederis and Micah Hyde split the kickoff-return chores vs. Denver.

Neal was added to the injury report with a hip injury while right tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee) and right guard T.J. Lang (illness) were added and are probable.
