Abbrederis’ Injury Could Open Door for Janis on Packers’ Offense

Missing practice for the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday were guard T.J. Lang, right tackle Bryan Bulaga and receiver Jared Abbrederis.

It took until the ninth game of his second season in the NFL for Jared Abbrederis to catch his first pass with the Green Bay Packers.

Who knows if or when he’ll make his next catch.

Abbrederis, who provided a late spark against Detroit and finished with four catches for 57 yards in Sunday’s game, sustained a rib injury during his final play of that game and will miss “several weeks,” coach Mike McCarthy said before Wednesday’s practice. He was hit hard from behind by Lions safety Glover Quin after making a 32-yard catch that set up a touchdown.

“You feel bad for Jared because this is his third injury,” McCarthy said, referencing the season-ending knee injury during the first week of training camp in 2014 and the concussion on the first day of training camp this year. “Hopefully, he can bounce back from this.”

Fourteen players are on the Packers' injury report, including Aaron Rodgers (throwing shoulder).

Out on Wednesday were right guard T.J. Lang and right tackle Bryan Bulaga. Lang missed one snap in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury while Bulaga is still dealing with soreness in his knee stemming from an injury sustained before the Week 2 game vs. Seattle that required surgery.

Left tackle David Bahktiari, who missed the final 30 snaps against Detroit with a knee injury, was back at his customary spot at left tackle and listed as limited. Bakhtiari, who missed the final three preseason games with a knee injury, was injured on the series starting with 11:20 left in the third quarter but didn’t come out of the game. After being examined on the sideline at the end of the possession, he went back and played one full drive before dropping out of the next series early in the fourth quarter.

“It just was the same thing, kind of just kept tweaking on me and I just eventually had enough,” Bakhtiari said.

While the Packers were without Abbrederis, rookie receiver Ty Montgomery was back at practice. He sprained an ankle against St. Louis before the bye and has missed the last three games, even though he hasn’t missed any of the 10 practices in the last three-plus weeks. For the first time since the injury, he was listed as full participation.

“He’s medically not cleared,” McCarthy said. “They haven't cut him all the way loose. Hopefully, that'll happen this week.”

Those injuries could provide an opening for Jeff Janis, the physically talented second-year receiver who has been unable to get any consistent playing time, even with Green Bay’s continued offensive struggles. Since catching two passes for 79 yards in about 40 snaps vs. San Diego, Janis played in two snaps vs. Denver, two snaps vs. Carolina and one snap vs. Detroit.

“Jeff’s doing a good job (with the) opportunities he’s been given on special teams, I’ve been very pleased with his participation there and his performance there,” McCarthy said. “And as time moves on, hopefully he’ll have more opportunities on offense. It’s really about continuing to practice, getting in and out of different personnel groups and, frankly, some players have performed a little higher in front of him, (like) Jared Abbrederis. Jared has actually performed very well in the past month, and you see the opportunities he had against Detroit and took full advantage of them. Hopefully, Jeff will be the next guy to do that.”

Janis has been one of the top players on one of the league's better special-teams units. With his size and speed, he'd add a dimension the Packers' offense sorely lacks. He just hasn't proven himself ready for prime-time.

"It gives you confidence when you’re playing well on special teams to go out there and carry it over to offense,"said. "Hopefully, if my name’s called, I can keep making plays on special teams and carry it over to offense."

Tight end Andrew Quarless, who is on injured reserve/designated for return with a knee injury, is eligible to practice but has not been cleared.

“I just talked to Andrew and he said he's ready to go. But he's not practicing today,” McCarthy said.
