Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Wednesday said he had no concerns about his injured throwing shoulder.
On Thursday, during the portion of practice that was open to reporters, Rodgers’ arm looked as good as ever. He was listed as full participation on the injury report after being limited on Wednesday.
While the Packers have a lengthy injury report – 15 players were listed on Thursday – coach Mike McCarthy will have no problems finding 46 relatively healthy bodies to line up against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. With right guard T.J. Lang (shoulder) and right tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee) returning to practice, the only player on the roster who did not participate in Thursday’s padded practice was receiver Jared Abbrederis (ribs). Between Bulaga and Lang, who both were listed as limited participation, Bulaga appeared to be getting a much heavier workload.
The Packers got two encouraging pieces of news on Wednesday with running back Eddie Lacy (groin) and receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) being listed as full participation after neither played against Detroit.
“Eddie looked good yesterday,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “We’ll go in pads today, a full padded practice, a number of inside run and team run periods. This will be good work for Eddie today. We’ll see where he is.”
Lacy said he got good feedback from running backs coach Sam Gash.
“I was able to make like cuts at the line, but when it came to opening up and bursting downfield, I didn’t feel as comfortable with it,” Lacy said of the Saturday practice before the Detroit game. “But today I was able to do that.”
The news wasn’t so good for Montgomery. Montgomery, who has missed the past three games, walked off the field with a trainer early in practice and did not return.
“I wouldn’t say it was a setback,” Montgomery said. “I did a lot yesterday. I did more on it yesterday than I have since I injured it, so it’s probably just a little aggravated.”
Montgomery said he sustained a high-ankle sprain against the Chargers before the bye. He’s participated in all 11 of the team’s practices since then but hasn’t been given the green light to play.
“It’s been pretty frustrating,” he said. “It just feels like it’s a guessing game on when it’s going to be ready, when it’s going to be time. I just have to listen to my body and be smart. My body is my job. If my body is not taken care of, I can’t perform.”
Meanwhile, McCarthy said he’s spending more time in the offensive meetings rooms this week with the Packers’ three-game losing streak rooted in a malfunctioning offense. In the first three quarters of the last three games, Green Bay has scored only 27 points.
Associate head coach Tom Clements will continue to call the plays
“Nothing has changed,” McCarthy said. “Everybody’s job description is exactly the same as it was when we put it together in the spring. I move from room to room and I try to be as resourceful as I possibly can to my coaches and to my players.”
Left tackle Matt Kalil was the only injured player among the Vikings that didn’t practice at all Thursday, but head coach Mike Zimmer said he “assumes” Kalil will be ready to play … with one caveat.
“I assume so, yes,” Zimmer said when asked if Kalil will play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. “What am I supposed to say – ‘No, he’s not going to play?’”
