The four-day break helped the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line but it wasn’t a cure-all.
Nine players were listed on the week’s initial injury report on Wednesday, with the entire starting offensive line taking up five of the spots. As was the case on Tuesday, center Corey Linsley did not participate. Guards Josh Sitton and T.J. Lang and tackles David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga were limited.
The state of the line was evident during the portion of practice open to reporters. During a two-minute drill, the only starter on the field was Bakhtiari.
“When you go through these things this time of year, I think you have to be very in tune with the workload of the whole team and the stress points of each individual,” coach Mike McCarthy said before practice. “And that’s really a big part of any head coach’s job, especially when you get into December football. So, we’re going to make sure every player gets what they need to be ready for the game, and more important make sure our team’s ready for the game. So, it’s more of an individual answer and every guy has something he’s dealing with.”
Bulaga and Lang were inactive for Thursday’s game against Detroit, Linsley dropped out in the second quarter and Bakhtiari missed a snap in the fourth quarter. At that point, all of the Packers' backups were in the game. Perhaps he was joking, but quarterback Aaron Rodgers said long snapper Brett Goode would have been the next man up.
On Wednesday, Bulaga said he felt “all right” and sounded cautiously optimistic about his availability for Sunday’s game against Dallas.
“I think it’s a day-by-day thing,” he said. “We’ll keep testing it and do a little more each day in practice and see how it goes.”
Rookie receiver Ty Montgomery, who has missed the last six games with a high-ankle sprain, was listed as limited. He was on course to play at Minnesota three weeks ago until aggravating the injury at practice. Since then, he hadn’t practiced until Tuesday.
“I’ll know come game time,” Montgomery said. “When it’s time to make those decisions, that’s when I’ll know. Until then, I’m not putting anything out of the window.”
Dallas has only three players on its injury report, with quarterback Tony Romo out with a broken collarbone and receiver Dez Bryant full participation with foot and knee injuries.
