Green Bay Packers Benefit from Extra Time

Only Corey Linsley and Nick Perry did not participate during the portion of Tuesday's practice that was open to reporters.

For the second consecutive day, Corey Linsley was absent from the practice field for the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.

The Packers listed all five of their starting linemen on Wednesday’s injury report as limited participation. During the portion of Thursday’s practice that was open to reporters, left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee), left guard Josh Sitton (back), right guard T.J. Lang (shoulder) and right tackle Bryan Bulaga (ankle) went through position drills and had a one-on-one period against the defensive line. No different than Wednesday, Bakhtiari was full participation, while Sitton, Lang and Bulaga were limited. Lang and Bulaga did not play last Thursday at Detroit.

Linsley, who injured his ankle during the first series of the Minnesota game, sat out the Chicago game and then missed the final two-plus quarters last week at Detroit after aggravating the injury. He would be replaced again by J.C. Tretter, who has played well in Linsley's place.

Joining Linsley as a non-participant at practice was outside linebacker Nick Perry (shoulder). He took a step backward after being limited on Wednesday, though it's possible the team was just being cautious with a key player during a padded practice.

Receiver Ty Montgomery was limited participation for the second consecutive day. He’s missed the last six games with a high-ankle sprain. He appeared set to play vs. Minnesota three weeks ago until aggravating the injury during the Thursday practice. Barring another setback, this could be the week that Montgomery returns.

“Ty Montgomery has definitely cleared a hurdle that he hasn't cleared in prior weeks,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said before practice. “He's practicing so, so far so good. We'll see what he can do today.”

One big advantage for the Packers this week is the schedule. They haven’t played since Thursday, meaning they got a four-day break and then an extra day of practice this week by working Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday rather than just Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Cowboys, on the other hand, played on Monday and will cut back on their practice time this week to be as fresh as possible for Sunday.

McCarthy is taking full advantage of the extra practice time.

“It helps in two areas,” he said. “It helps in your preparation for Dallas and it gives you more time to work on fundamantals, so that's what the plan is. So far, we've executed it, today is our most important practice, it will be our padded work.”

The Packers are not getting an edge from Mother Nature. Sunday’s forecast calls for a high of 54 and a chance of showers. That’s about 20 degrees warmer than normal.

“I'm sure the people from Texas like the weather forecast,” McCarthy said.
