Green Bay Packers CB Sam Shields Out for Sunday at Oakland

Mike Daniels, T.J. Lang, Corey Linsley and Davante Adams were listed as questionable on Friday, though Saturday's updates brought some good news.

The Green Bay Packers will be without starting cornerback Sam Shields for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders.

“Sam will not make the flight and he will be out for Sunday’s contest,” coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday morning.

Losing Shields is a big loss in light of the Raiders’ passing attack, with impressive second-year quarterback Derek Carr throwing to veteran Michael Crabtree and top rookie Amari Cooper. The Packers did well last week against Dallas when Shields went down in the second quarter, with rookie first-round pick Damarious Randall matching up on Dez Bryant, rookie second-round pick Quinten Rollins playing the other cornerback spot and veteran Casey Hayward manning the slot position. But Carr is a much better player than Matt Cassel, who is the Cowboys’ third starter this season.

“Just the competition and just being competitive every single snap," Randall said. "And just knowing that every time the quarterback drops back to pass that he’s looking to get the ball to his top, top guy, and to who’s covering him, that just feels great.”

Four starters were listed as questionable: guard T.J. Lang, center Corey Linsley, receiver Davante Adams and defensive tackle Mike Daniels. Following Saturday's practice, the Packers upgraded Lang, Adams and Daniels to probable.

For Oakland, right tackle Austin Howard and safety Nate Allen are out. Howard was the projected starting right guard but injuries forced him to tackle, meaning the Raiders will be without the entire right side of their line.

Packers rookie receiver Ty Montgomery will miss an eighth consecutive game. He had another setback with the high-ankle sprain sustained exactly two months ago vs. San Diego.

“That’s really a medical conversation,” McCarthy said when asked if putting Montgomery on season-ending injured reserve was a consideration. “Obviously, he’s been having a number of those through the process, a lot of information’s been gathered and we’ll just continue to work through that.”

Montgomery called the ordeal "very frustrating."

"I’m still waiting to find out," if more testing is necessary. "We’re getting ready to play Oakland, so I’m just waiting to find out. I’m kind of fed up with the process."

The Packers are banged up at receiver, with Adams battling what McCarthy termed a “heel issue." All five starting offensive linemen are on the injury report, with Lang and Linsley questionable and the others probable. Lang had been on the report for a shoulder but ankle was added on Friday. At center, the Packers might have a decision to make. Linsley has missed two of the last three games and hasn’t played extensively since the Nov. 15 game vs. Detroit because of an ankle injury. McCarthy said Linsley had a good day of practice on Thursday. In Linsley’s place, however, J.C. Tretter has performed well.

“Those are good situations to be involved in,” McCarthy said. “You always want all your players healthy and ready to go. We’ll move forward accordingly.

Finally, McCarthy wouldn’t say when the team intends to activate tight end Andrew Quarless from injured reserve/designated for return. A decision has to be made by Monday. Quarless on Thursday said he’s taken more reps this week and would be ready to play the Raiders. His fate for Sunday could be linked to any decision on Montgomery.

“I think clearly from Week 1 to Week 2 he took a jump,” McCarthy said. “But I think like anybody that’s coming off that type of situation, there’s an adjustment, so I think you saw more of an adjustment from Week 2 to 3, and so far so good.”
