Packers CB Sam Shields Misses Another Practice

Cornerback Sam Shields and left tackle David Bakhtiari would play key roles if they're able to play for the Green Bay Packers in Sunday's playoff game at Washington.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields was not even in attendance for the portion of practice open to reporters on Thursday, adding further doubt about his availability for Sunday’s NFC Wild Card game vs. Washington.

“Sam is still going through the (concussion) protocol,” coach Mike McCarthy said before practice. “It’s obviously a process. Everybody’s injury is different, especially when we’re dealing with concussions.”

Shields has missed the last three games and his absence would be felt against Washington’s surging passing attack, with Kirk Cousins finishing fifth in the league and passer rating and first in completion percentage. Unlike the first two days of this week, Shields at least practiced last week.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari wasn't with the rest of the offensive line when reporters were allowed to watch but was listed as limited participation as he tries to bounce back from an ankle injury that cost him the final two games of the regular season.

“I hope so,” McCarthy said when asked if Bakhtiari would be ready for the Redskins. “It’s going to take the week.”

If Bakhtiari can’t play or get through the game, who would take his place in the lineup? McCarthy made it clear that it’s not going to be Josh Sitton. The Pro Bowl left guard moved to tackle and played relatively well against the Vikings last week, but he gave up two sacks – including the critical sack-strip-touchdown that made it 20-3 in the third quarter. The week before, Don Barclay started and gave up four sacks in a 38-8 loss to the Cardinals. J.C. Tretter is another option should Bakhtiari be sidelined.

As is the case with Shields, Bakhtiari’s presence would be of major importance. While the Redskins don’t have a great pass rush, outside linebackers Ryan Kerrigan (9.5), Preston Smith (8.0) and Trent Murphy (3.5) have combined for 21 sacks. Smith, an explosive rookie, would be the primary target for the left tackle on passing downs.

Outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott (quad) and defensive end Datone Jones (neck) also didn’t practice. A source said Jones’ injury is “nothing career threatening” and wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Jones plays against Washington.

As was the case with Bakhtiari, Sitton wasn't with the line when reporters were present but was listed as limited participation. Cornerback Damarious Randall was added to the injury report, increasing the total to a season-high 18 players. He was limited by a groin injury.
