Packers Thin at Cornerback

Due to injuries and a suspension, three of the Packers' top six corners could be out for Sunday night. Here is the first injury report of the week.

The Green Bay Packers started their workweek with Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter as their only healthy cornerbacks.

Without Sam Shields (concussion), Josh Hawkins (hamstring) and Demetri Goodson (suspended), the Packers could be incredibly thin at cornerback for Sunday night’s game at Minnesota. Shields’ concussion is particularly troubling considering he missed four games late last season with a concussion. He remains in the concussion protocol, coach Mike McCarthy said before Wednesday’s practice.

Perhaps the lack of cornerback depth won’t be an issue considering the Vikings’ offense revolves around running back Adrian Peterson. The Vikings beat the Titans on Sunday with only minimal contributions from quarterback Shaun Hill. The alternative is Sam Bradford, who was acquired in a trade from Philadelphia on Sept. 4 and might not have the full offensive menu at his disposal.

Versatile Micah Hyde, the team’s dime defensive back and primary backup at safety, started his career with the Packers at cornerback, so he’d the obvious fallback plan.

An addition at the position might be on the horizon. The Packers released running back Jhurell Pressley, who they claimed off waivers from the Vikings after final cuts. A corresponding roster move was not made. The Packers do not have a cornerback on the practice squad.

Well, actually, they do. For a potential way-down-the-road option, Packers cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt spent the portion of practice open to reporters working with Herb Waters, an undrafted rookie receiver from Miami who didn’t make the roster but was signed to the practice squad. Whitt, of course, was instrumental in another former undrafted Miami receiver, Shields, make the transition to cornerback.

Also from practice, Hawkins, safety Chris Banjo and outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott rehabbed their hamstring injuries on the far side of Clarke Hinkle Field. All three were listed as did not participate. Banjo appeared to be running the best of that trio. Plus, receiver Trevor Davis (shoulder) returned to practice. He was listed as limited participation.
