Sam Shields is making progress in his recovery from his latest concussion.
Just not enough progress to play on Sunday night.
Speaking to reporters before Thursday’s practice, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy ruled out his standout veteran cornerback for a prime-time matchup against the New York Giants.
“I had a chance to visit with Sam,” McCarthy said. “He’s going through the process. He’s making some improvement. He will not be available this week.”
Shields suffered the concussion during the second half of the Sept. 11 game against Jacksonville. It was the fourth concussion of his professional career. The last one, sustained last season during the December matchup vs. Dallas, kept Shields out of the lineup for four games.
Without Shields, the Packers will go with the same trio they’ve used the past two games: second-year players Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter. Green Bay’s pass defense ranks 29th in yards allowed per game (307.3) and 31st in yards allowed per attempt (8.31). That group will have to stop Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who ranks fifth with 1,186 passing yards. Superstar receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will be a focal point of the Giants’ offense after a career-worst 23 yards vs. Minnesota on Monday night. He'll be a focal point for the Packers’ defense, too, after that unit yielded nine catches for 182 yards to Minnesota's Stefon Diggs and six catches for 205 yards to Detroit's Marvin Jones.
“They’re year in and year out a playoff team and Aaron (Rodgers) always plays at a high level and their offense has the ability to score points,” Manning said during a conference call on Wednesday evening. “I know as an offense we’ve got to come in there and do our job and play at a high level and try to control the ball. We know we’re going to have to score some points and play well. Looking forward to Sunday night in Green Bay at Lambeau. It’s always a special place to play.”
Shields and tight end Jared Cook were the only players not to practice for the players. For the Giants, cornerbacks Eli Apple and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were limited. They missed the loss to the Vikings.
