Injuries Decimate Secondaries of Packers, Bears

It's possible both teams will be without their three cornerbacks for Thursday.

The secondaries will be the primary concerns for the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears for their Thursday night matchup at Lambeau Field.

For Green Bay, cornerback Sam Shields was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday and fellow corners Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins didn’t practice on Tuesday and probably won’t play on Thursday. That means it could be LaDarius Gunter and Micah Hyde as the corners with Demetri Goodson entering in the nickel package.

“We’re going to be a work in progress there,” Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers said on Tuesday. “We’re playing some young guys. Obviously, it’s good to get Goodson back. He’s got a little experience there. I’ve got confidence in our young guys. We just have to go out and perform better than we did Sunday."

For Chicago, cornerback Kyle Fuller is on injured reserve and fellow corners Tracy Porter and Bryce Callahan didn’t practice on Tuesday, either. That means it could be Jacoby Glenn and DeVante Bausby at corner and CreVon LeBlanc in the slot.

“You have to study all the film you have access to, even if you’ve got to go back multiple games to try to find stuff on guys,” Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said in his conference call with Bears beat writers. “You have to dive into that preparation even on a short week, and try and pick out anything you can take from that. Injuries are a tough part of this game, especially on a short week and playing on Thursday. It’s always difficult when you’ve played the week before and try to gear it back it up when you don’t who is going to play and be out there until usually 90 minutes before the game.”

Combined, the two teams had 16 players on the did-not-participate list on the practice report. That includes Josh Sitton, the former Packers guard who was released at the end of training camp.

“He’s a good player. He’s accomplished. He’s got experience,” Bears coach John Fox said during his conference call. “Anytime you can bring that to a young group (and) you can put a guy like Josh at left (guard), and Kyle Long at right (guard), I think that’s helpful with what he brings to the table. He’s been an excellent addition for us.”
