Eddie Lacy Among Seven Ruled Out for Packers for Thursday

The Packers have to designate seven inactive players each week. That might not be too hard. They listed seven as out for Thursday night, including running back Eddie Lacy and cornerbacks Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins.

The Green Bay Packers might not have 46 healthy players to dress for Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Following Wednesday’s practice, coach Mike McCarthy ruled out seven players: receiver Jared Abbrederis, safety Chris Banjo, tight end Jared Cook, running back Eddie Lacy, cornerback Damarious Randall, cornerback Quinten Rollins and running back James Starks. Those seven players alone will fill the inactives list and get the Packers down to 46. Receiver Davante Adams was a limited participant at practice following Sunday’s concussion and is questionable. If Adams doesn’t get the green light, the Packers presumably would be a man short, barring an injured-reserve transaction between now and kickoff.

The good news – and it’s a short list – is that right tackle Bryan Bulaga and receiver Randall Cobb did not receive a status designation and are good to go.

McCarthy held out a glimmer of hope for Lacy earlier in the day. Without Lacy and Starks, the Packers’ backfield will be left in the hands of receiver Ty Montgomery, newly acquired Knile Davis and presumably undrafted rookie Don Jackson. Assuming he’s promoted, it’s possible Jackson will go from the practice squad to the starting lineup. Another roster move would need to be made to create a spot for him on the roster.

Without Sam Shields (injured reserve), Randall and Rollins, the Packers will field a cornerback group consisting of jack-of-all-trades Micah Hyde, second-year player LaDarius Gunter, Demetri Goodson, who returned last week from a four-game suspension, and undrafted rookie Josh Hawkins. That unsung quartet will face the league’s fourth-ranked passing attack.

“I have great confidence,” McCarthy said of that group. “They’re getting in there to play, and we’re going to win the game. I mean, we’ve got a good football team. Every one of our guys are good football players. Maybe on a different level as far as their experience and things like that, but they’re working to get better. We’ve got a good plan. We’ll emphasize that today, and get ready to go tomorrow night.”

Chicago isn’t the picture of health. Receiver Eddie Royal is out and guard Josh Sitton is doubtful. Cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Bryce Callahan were limited participants at Wednesday’s practice and are questionable.
