Montgomery Set to Return; Matthews, Cobb Questionable

Barring an unexpected setback, Ty Montgomery will play on Sunday against Indianapolis. Clay Matthews and Randall Cobb, however, were listed as questionable.

Running back/receiver Ty Montgomery is hopeful that he’ll return to the lineup for the Green Bay Packers’ game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

“It’s looking good,” he said on Friday. “I’m feeling optimistic about it.”

He’s right. Montgomery wasn’t given an injury designation on Friday’s injury report.

The news wasn’t all rosy. Receiver Randall Cobb and outside linebacker Clay Matthews, who didn’t play against Atlanta last week because of hamstring injuries, were listed as questionable. So was cornerback Quinten Rollins, who has missed the last three games with a groin injury. All three would have been limited participation had the team practiced on Friday.

“I think all three of those guys are making progress, but they’re going to need the full week,” coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday morning. “I know Clay felt pretty good yesterday. Q’s getting better. Randall’s not probably as far along as he’d like to be. Today’s an important day for their process to get back. Frankly, all three of those guys need to see how they feel Sunday morning because they need to work Saturday.”

The Packers are in a precarious situation at cornerback. Getting Rollins back would be huge because one of the replacement starters, Demetri Goodson, is questionable with a concussion. He didn’t practice this week.

Montgomery missed last week’s game against Atlanta after blood was found in his urine, a symptom of sickle cell trait. He said he did more at practice this week compared to last week, including taking part in 11-on-11 drills. Tired of talking about the subject, Montgomery wouldn’t go into detail about how he prevents a reoccurrence of the symptoms.

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” he said. “I don’t want to be rude but anything that has to do with what I was dealing with, I just don’t even want to talk about it because I’m over it.”

Running back James Starks and tight end Jared Cook returned to practice but won’t play. Starks will miss a fourth consecutive game following knee surgery and Cook will miss a fifth consecutive game with a high-ankle sprain.

“James did well. Jared was not as far along as James Starks,” McCarthy said. “They’re making progress. It was good to have them both out there.”

The Colts have 18 players on their injury report. Cornerback Vontae Davis is questionable and four starters — safety Mike Adams, defensive lineman Kendall Langford, right tackle Joe Reitz and guard Jack Mewhort — are out.
