Rodgers, Matthews Practice for Packers

Only four players did not practice during the portion of Thursday's practice that was open to reporters, a list that includes T.J. Lang.

Will Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews be able to play on Sunday against Houston?

Judging by Thursday afternoon’s practice, the answer is pointing toward yes.

The Green Bay Packers’ star quarterback and standout linebacker took part in Thursday’s practice inside the Don Hutson Center. They didn’t take all the reps during the portion of practice open to reporters and  were listed as limited participation, but they took enough to back up coach Mike McCarthy’s contention on Wednesday that they “fully expect to play” against the Texans.

Rodgers’ playing status isn’t in question as much as his effectiveness should he play. Will he have the mobility that is the hallmark of his game? That facet of his game was not displayed while reporters were present, with Rodgers standing in the pocket and firing one strike after another.

The only players who did not practice while reporters were present were cornerback Demetri Goodson (knee), outside linebacker Kyler Fackrell (hamstring), guard T.J. Lang (foot), center J.C. Tretter (knee).

Asked about Lang on Thursday morning, coach Mike McCarthy said Lang was “getting better” and would take part in a rehab workout before practice. If all went well, McCarthy said, Lang might “accelerate into some individual drills.” Lang, however, did not participate in the individual-skills period that reporters were allowed to watch.

Lang has missed the last two games while Tretter has missed the last four. Tretter did some jogging on the side away from the rest of the offense.

Starting inside linebackers Jake Ryan (ankle) and Blake Martinez (knee) practiced in limited fashion. Both players were sidelined for the Philadelphia game last week, and Ryan hasn't played on defense in any of the last three games due to a sprained ankle sustained at Tennessee on Nov. 13.

Martinez “made a lot of progress earlier in the week,” McCarthy said. Like Lang, Martinez was supposed to go through a rehab workout before practice. Unlike Lang, Martinez continued into individual drills.

Extra point: A source said that former Packers quarterback Joe Callahan was returning to the team's practice squad after stints on the 53-man rosters in New Orleans and Cleveland. He was not at practice; nor was receiver Dez Stewart.
