SATURDAY'S UPDATE: Following Saturday's practice, the Green Bay Packers listed cornerback Damarious Randall as questionable and downgraded offensive linemen T.J. Lang and J.C. Tretter from doubtful to out.
Meanwhile, Houston ruled out one of its premier defenders, versatile Jadeveon Clowney. He did not make the trip to Green Bay, according to the Houston Chronicle. Clowney ranks among the league leaders with 12 tackles for losses as the former No. 1 overall pick was having a breakout season.
Randall was listed as limited participation all week and was not given an injury designation on Friday. On Saturday, however, he was listed as questionable. Randall returned to the lineup last week after missing the previous five games following groin surgery.
Lang will miss a third consecutive game and Tretter will be out for the fifth straight week.
Also, the Packers activated undrafted corner Makinton Dorleant from injured reserve. To make room, Demetri Goodson was placed on IR with a knee injury sustained at Washington.
FRIDAY'S STORY: Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews are listed as questionable for the Green Bay Packers' game against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Rodgers didn’t do much at Thursday’s practice as the Packers try to get their star quarterback’s ailing hamstring ready for Sunday.
“Aaron looked good,” coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday morning. “We had a set number of reps for him to take in the unit period. That went well. Then he focused on the rehab part of it. Everything went as expected.”
Reporters were present for the unit period, which lasted 32 minutes. He worked about half the period, facing a group of offensive players running through the Texans’ scheme. Rodgers looked sharp throwing the ball but stayed in the pocket.
As usual, the Packers didn't practice on Friday but will on Saturday. That practice usually lasts about an hour but McCarthy took “a period or two” out of Thursday’s practice and moved it to Saturday. McCarthy said Rodgers will do more on Saturday than he did on Thursday.
Along with Rodgers and Matthews, starting inside linebackers Jake Ryan and Blake Martinez are questionable.
Matthews practiced through a shoulder injury and “looked good,” McCarthy said.
“Same thing” as Rodgers, he continued. “Just in the portion of practice that you were in there for, the intensity didn’t get much higher than that the rest of the way. He did everything. Jake Ryan did what he was supposed to do. Blake (Martinez) did more (than expected). So, we’ll see how he comes through today. Tomorrow will be key for all those guys.”
Right guard T.J. Lang likely will miss a third consecutive game with a foot injury sustained on the opening series at Tennessee. Don Barclay started against Washington and Jason Spriggs started against Philadelphia.
For Houston, starting outside linebacker John Simon is out and three other defensive starters, end Jadeveon Clowney, outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus and safety Andre Hal, are questionable. Clowney and Mercilus practiced all week and should play while Hal has been out due to illness.
