Green Bay Packers Have Cap Space, But ...

On the bright side, the Green Bay Packers are set to enter free agency with a little more than $40 million of cap space.

First, the good news for Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson as free agency unofficially starts today.

The Packers have $40,075,817 in their financial war chest, according to the latest data from the NFL Players Association.

Now, the bad news: No team in the league has fewer players under contract than the Packers. Green Bay has 47 players under contract — two fewer than New England.

More bad news: Fewer teams have more key players up for free agency. There are eight Packers among Scout.com’s top 100 available players, including Nick Perry, T.J. Lang and Jared Cook among the top 33.

And even more bad news: $40 million seems like a lot, but it’s barely above the league average of $35,461,361. Green Bay ranks 13th in available cap space. With so many teams having so much cash to spend, it’s going to be difficult for the Packers to keep their team intact — let alone add anyone from the outside.

Below is a list of the Packers’ 11 unrestricted free agents, listed in order of snaps played in 2016. Other teams can begin negotiating with those players starting at 11 a.m. today. The free-agent signing period starts at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Offense: G T.J. Lang, C J.C. Tretter, TE Jared Cook, RB Eddie Lacy, G Don Barclay, RB Christine Michael.
Defense: DB Micah Hyde, OLB Nick Perry, OLB Julius Peppers, OLB Datone Jones.
Special teams: LS Brett Goode.
