3,722 Snaps Go Out the Green Bay Packers’ Free-Agent Door

Here are some noteworthy numbers showing the scale of the Packers’ offseason defections.

The Green Bay Packers have lost seven players in free agency this offseason.

To put that in some perspective:

— Those seven players combined to play 3,722 snaps on offense or defense: defensive back Micah Hyde, 10th on the team, 817 snaps; guard T.J. Lang, 11th, 791; outside linebacker Julius Peppers, 18th, 584; outside linebacker Datone Jones, 20th, 548; center J.C. Tretter, 23rd, 488; tight end Jared Cook, 28th, 328; running back Eddie Lacy, 37th, 166.

— They combined to start 56 games: Lang, 13; Hyde, 11; Peppers, 11; Tretter, seven; Lacy, five; Cook, five; Jones, four.

— All seven contributed noteworthy production. Lang was a Pro Bowler. Lacy averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Cook tied for the team postseason lead with 18 catches. Peppers was second on the team with 7.5 sacks. Jones led the team with 16 quarterback hits. Including playoffs, Hyde was second on the team with four interceptions. In his seven games before a season-ending injury, Tretter was ProFootballFocus.com’s fifth-ranked center.

— In terms of base salary, those seven ranked in the top 25 in base salary: Peppers, fourth, $7 million; Lang, sixth, $4.6 million; Hyde, 10th, $1.67 million; Cook, 12th, $1.425 million; Jones, 16th, $1 million; Lacy, 20th, $867,000; and Tretter, 25th, $675,000.

And that doesn’t even include two players who were released: Sam Shields, third, $8 million; James Starks, 14th, $1.1 million.

— Including Shields and Starks, those nine players combined for 25.78 percent of the team’s salary cap last season.

— In terms of their new salaries, the seven departed free agents signed for a combined $99.45 million, including $54.12 million guaranteed.

— Only Dallas (nine) and Oakland (eight) have lost more players at the time of this posting. The Cowboys and Packers are the only teams to have a net loss of six free agents.

— Green Bay’s only unrestricted free-agent addition has been tight end Martellus Bennett. Houston is the only team with zero. Cincinnati, Green Bay, Kansas City, the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants and Pittsburgh have signed one apiece.
