Losman is the QB of the future. Losman brings the same type of skills that Packer fans have marveled at when watching Favre play. Like Favre, Losman has a howitzer of an arm. He also has nice size and great mobility. Losman can make things happen when everything else breaks down. Losman has already gone out of his way to meet Favre. He would love to learn from the future Hall of Famer. If the student is anything like the teacher, Packer fans can expect a bright future after Favre finally ends his brilliant career.
2) DB Matt Ware ... UCLA
The Packers have some definite needs in the defensive backfield, even with the signing of S Mark Roman and the re-signing of DB Michael Hawthorne. The team still needs depth at both S and CB. Ware has the ability to play both positions. He also has great size for a DB and is very physical. The bottom line is that Ware has a nose for the football. The pick also makes sense as Al Harris will be 30 years old this season and also a free agent at the end of the year.
3) DL Tommy Kelly ... Mississippi State
Kelly has the ability to play both inside and outside on the defensive line. He has a great combination of size and speed. He has 1st round talent, but underachieved at times at MSU. Kelly can be special, but he has to become more consistent.
4) LB Alex Lewis ... Wisconsin
The Packers add another athlete to their defense. Lewis is a bit on the small side, but he hits like a heavyweight. Lewis has a motor that never stops. He can play a base OLB, plus has the ability to rush the passer. He would also be a an excellent addition to the special teams as he showed great ability to block punts.
5) OL Tyson Clabo ... Wake Forest
Clabo brings versatility to the offensive line. He can play G or T. He is a big man that runs well for his size. He would be good insurance in case the Packers lose G Marco Rivera after the 2004 season to free agency.
6) LB Maurice Jones ... South Florida
Jones has a good combination of size and speed. He also has the ability to play inside or outside. Jones plays the run well and also can keep up with most backs on passing plays. He will also contribute on special teams.
7) WR/KR Derek Abney ... Kentucky
Abney is on the small side for a WR. He has the ability to take short passes to the house. Abney is a very dangerous return man. The Packers have been trying to upgrade that part of their team for the last couple of years. Abney has a chance to be the return man the Packers have been looking for.
7) CB Shawntae Spencer ... Pittsburgh
Spencer's stock is rising. He may go earlier than this based on his latest 40 times. Spencer is a tall CB that could use more bulk. Spencer excels in press coverage, but he needs more consistency.
The Bottom Line
The Packers finally get their QB of the future in Losman. The team also added some real athletes to the defense with the additions of DBs Matt Ware and Shawntae Spencer, DL Tommy Kelly, and LBs Alex Lewis and Maurice Jones. The Pack also gets some offensive line insurance with the selection of OL Tyson Clabo. The icing on the cake is possibly getting the return man the team has desperately been seeking in WR Derek Abney.
