Reports say Collins close to deal with Oakland

Former New York Giant quarterback Kerry Collins will sign a deal with the Oakland Raiders, the team said, and the recent talks between the two parties were likely the cause of Collins' cancelled visit to Green Bay.<p>

New York media sources reported Sunday evening that Collins would sign a three-year deal Sunday.

According to a Raiders' spokesperson, Collins was in Oakland earlier this month and spoke with the team in recent days. Collins had a physical and met with Raiders coaches, but didn't work out.

The Giants released Collins a few days after acquiring top-pick Eli Manning from the San Diego Chargers. Collins is said to be looking for a starting position and visited Oakland, San Francisco and Baltimore before canceling his Green Bay trip.

While Oakland is similar to Green Bay in that the teams have former Super Bowl and MVP veteran quarterbacks on the roster, the similarities at field general end there. At 38, Rich Gannon is four years older than Brett Favre and was having a sub-par 2003 campaign before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in late October. After surgery, Gannon is reportedly healthy and ready to go, but the Collins signing puts Gannon's job and $7 million salary in '04 in doubt.
