Roster moves: Offensive lineman signs

The Green Bay Packers today signed offensive tackle Mike Collins and released defensive end Eric Powell.<p>

Collins, 25, originally signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Chicago Bears on April 26, 2002, but has never played in an NFL regular season game.

The 6-foot-5, 292-pound Collins can also play guard. He started at both positions over his four-year career at Wake Forest. A first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as a senior guard, Collins blocked for a team that averaged 221.6 rushing yards per game.

The Packers have gone most of this week without three of their starters on the offensive line. Tackle Mark Tauscher has been out with a sprained ankle. Center Mike Flanagan (knee) and guard Mike Wahle (knee) are not expected to begin practicing until next week.

Collins is No. 54 (white jersey) on the Packers' roster.

Powell participated in Green Bay's off-season mini-camps but injured his knee and was not able to participate in training camp this week.

Powell was with the Packers during training camp last year before he was released in late August. He played in NFL Europe this spring for the Cologne Centurions.
