Packers-Jaguars notebook

The Packers and Jaguars will both be taking a close look at special teamers Friday night. <P>

Jacksonville recently signed a long-time veteran as competition, or insurance, for a struggling youngster. Sound familiar? The Jaguars inked kicker Steve Christie, a 14-year veteran who most recently spent three seasons with the San Diego Chargers. They're hoping Christie sticks as the only other kicker on the Jaguars' roster is rookie Josh Scobee who has missed three out of four kicks during preseason. Scobee will get another chance Friday, according to Jacksonville training camp reports.

While Antonio Chatman has emerged from the field in the race at returnman for Green Bay, a host of Packers are hanging on to roster hopes through their stand-out special teams play. The list includes cornerback Jason Horton, who made a splash in the preseason opener, linebackers Steve Josue, Jermaine Taylor, Maurice Jones and Tyreo Harrison and receiver Scottie Vines.

Likewise, Jacksonville still has a big decision to make. David Allen and Jermaine Lewis face as they battle for the Jaguars' kick return position.

Despite Lewis' continuing recovery from a torn ACL suffered in Week 2 last year, he's dangerous and the Packers will get a good look their coverage ability vs. the two-time Pro Bowler. Lewis led the NFL in punt returns with an average of 16.1, the highest mark ever for a player with at least 30 returns. Lewis is one of three players to return two puntsfor touchdowns in the same game twice in his career. He also has a Super Bowl runback to his credit - an 84-year kickoff return for a touchdown in Super Bowl XXXV vs. the New York Giants.
