Packers 2005 Mock Draft

The Green Bay Packers will focus on upgrading their defense in the April 23-24 NFL Draft.<p>

Green Bay has some major holes to fill, but the selections the Packers make might depend on what UFAs they sign before the draft. For instance, the Packers were scheduled to bring in LB Monty Beisel and S Arturo Freeman for visits this week. The Packers will also look to help fill some needs on offense like the guard position, which lost both starters to free agency.

1) Thomas Davis - S/OLB (Georgia)

Davis brings great versatility to the Packers. He can play either S or OLB. Davis is a fierce hitter that can intimidate offensive players. The Packers will probably try Davis at S first, but will put him where he will most likely have more of an immediate impact. Other possibilities with this pick...DE Matt Roth, DE Marcus Spears and S Brodney Pool.

2) Barrett Ruud - ILB (Nebraska)

There are some that feel Ruud may not be available for the Packers at this point. If he is, the Packers should not hesitate picking him. Ruud is big and fast and would be perfect to man the MLB position in Jim Bates' defense. The addition of Ruud would allow the Packers to move Nick Barnett to WLB. Other possibilities with this pick...QB Charlie Frye, G David Baas and DT Anttaj Hawthorne.

2) Evan Mathis - G (Alabama)

Mathis is very similar to G Mike Wahle. Mathis is very athletic and he can get out in space and get to the next level with his blocks. Mathis may be available in the 3rd round, but his stock is rising fast as he also has the versatility to play T. Other possibilities with this pick...ILB Lance Mitchell, DE Justin Tuck and S Vincent Fuller.

3) Antonio Perkins - CB/PR (Oklahoma)

Perkins is also a versatile player that can help both the secondary and the return game. Perkins has great speed and can take a pick to the house. That same speed makes him very dangerous on punt returns. Other possibilities with this pick...QB Kyle Orton, S Dustin Fox and WR/PR Roscoe Parrish.

4) Ryan Riddle - DE (California)

Riddle brings better than average speed and athletic ability from the DE position. He could use more bulk, but Riddle always is hustling to the ball. Somewhat similar to DE Aaron Kampman. Other possibilities with this pick...S Josh Bullocks, G Nick Kaczur and ILB Robert McCune.

5) Chris Rix - QB (Florida State)

Rix has 1st round athletic ability and arm strength. The problem with Rix has been his mental makeup and his lack of maturity. The Packers are pretty happy with Craig Nall's development and Rix could help push J.T. O'Sullivan for the third QB job. Rix would be wise to hang with Brett Favre, not just from a football sense, but also to take in lessons learned in life. Other possibilities with this pick...OLB James Kinney, DE Brady Poppinga and DT Santonio Thomas. 6) Jim Leonhard - S/PR (Wisconsin)

Leonhard is small for a S, but he is always around the ball, Leonhard takes great angles to passes and also is a solid tackler. It doesn't hurt that Leonhard also has the ability to return punts. Either way, Leonhard can contribute immediately on special teams. Other possibilities with this pick... WR/KR Tab Perry, OL Mike Lorenz and OLB Arnold Harrison.
