Seventh round pick signs

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed linebacker Kurt Campbell, the team's first of two selections in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Campell, a 6-1, 227-pound linebacker out of Albany, is the fourth Packers draft pick to sign a contract, along with guard/center Junius Coston (May 16), guard William Whitticker (June 20) and defensive end Michael sMontgomery (June 21).

A four-year letterman (2001-2004), he started his final two seasons at the rover position after playing cornerback the first two years. In all, Campbell saw action in 34 games, with 28 starts, notching career totals of 120 tackles, one interception among 19 passes defensed, and two fumble recoveries. He is the first Albany player ever to be drafted in the NFL.

Green Bay acquired Campbell with the 245th overall selection, the third of three picks obtained in a draft day trade with Philadelphia.

Campbell will competing for a backup position at weak-side linebacker in training camp.

Also Wednesday, the team announced that it has waived linebacker John Garrett and safety Chonn Lacey, and activated cornerback Chris Day from the NFL Europe League Injured List.

Packers rookies are scheduled to report for training camp July 25 and begin practices a day later.

The two preseason roster reduction dates, mandated by the NFL, are Aug. 30 (to 65 players) and Sept. 3 (to 53 players).
