Packers pursue returner

Free agent veteran return specialist Brian Mitchell was expected to visit Green Bay this week, but he never did. The Packers are in search for a punt and kickoff returner after Allen Rossum, the Packers' returner for the last two seasons, signed with the Atlanta Falcons earlier this month.<p>

Mitchell, 33, has received interest from a handful of teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, where he has played for the last two seasons. He played 10 seasons for the Washington Redskins before signing with the Eagles.

Mitchell's agent, Steve Baker, told the Green Bay News-Chronicle today that there was never a visit planned to Green Bay, despite various news reports.

"That's totally inaccurate," said Baker, Mitchell's agent. "We've had conversations with them, but that's it."

Unless something unexpected happens, Mitchell, an unrestricted free agent, will return to Philadelphia.

"It's very likely," Baker said. "He's comfortable there."

Last year, Mitchell averaged 12 yards per punt return and 25 yards per kickoff return.

Mitchell is the NFL's all-time record holder for most kickoff returns, kickoff return yardage, punt return yardage, combined kick returns and combined kick return yards. He has 12 kick returns for touchdowns in his career, including one kickoff return for a touchdown last year.
