New Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is in the process of forming his coaching staff. He worked with Robinson in 2004 when McCarthy was offensive coordinator of the Saints.
Robinson, 53, has 21 years of coaching experience, dating back to 1984 when he was an the wide receivers/tight ends coach for the Memphis Showboats. Robinson also made coaching stops, mainly as a wide receivers coach, at Georgia Tech (1987-89), Atlanta Falcons (1990-93), Indianapolis Colts (1994-97), New York Giants (1998-2003) and New Orleans. He has worked with a lot of the league's top receivers, including Joe Horn, Donte Stallworth, Marvin Harrison, Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard.
Drafted by Atlanta in 1975, Robinson played for the Giants from 1976-79. He led the Giants in receptions in 1978 and '79. Robinson played for San Francisco (1980) and Denver (1981) before moving into coaching.
McCarthy reportedly is pursuing Alex Van Pelt as a candidate for quarterbacks coach. Van Pelt was named the University of Buffalo's quarterbacks coach earlier this month under new head coach and ex-Packers assistant Turner Gill. McCarthy was Van Pelt's quarterbacks coach while at the University of Pittsburgh from 1989-91.
Packers defensive line coach Bob Sanders is perhaps the strongest candidate to be named Green Bay's defensive coordinator. Sanders has coached in college and the pros since 1978. He came to the NFL under ex-Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates in 2001 when Bates with with the Miami Dolphins.
McCarthy said Monday that "continuity may be something that may factor into my future decision" regarding his selection of a defensive coordinator, Green Bay's fourth in four seasons. Since Sanders knows Bates' system well, it is very possible that McCarthy will stick with many of the existing defensive coaches as possible by hiring Sanders. McCarthy released linebackers coach Mark Duffner and secondary/safeties coach Joe Baker last week, but they have yet to find new jobs.
Veteran coaches with coordinator experience that McCarthy may consider include former Texans coach Dom Capers, ex-Minnesota Vikings coordinator Ted Cottrell, and Ex-Lions coordinator and ex-Bears coach Dick Jauron.
