Favre flash: QB closing in on decision

Quarterback speaks with Hattiesburg reporter about his future in football

Brett Favre told a Hattiesburg, MS, newspaper on Tuesday night that he soon will make a decision on if he will play football next season. He said that he plans to speak with head coach Mike McCarthy to discuss his future, and probably will not wait until April, like he did last year, before deciding what he plans to do.

"There's not really (a timetable)," said Favre told the Hattiesburg American. "I said after the last game (Dec. 31) that I'd decide within two weeks, but I probably jumped the gun when I said that. But I'm going to call McCarthy (Tuesday) night. He left a message for me this morning.

I don't want to drag this out as long as I did last year."

Favre, who makes his off-season home in Hattiesburg, spoke to a reporter after watching his daughter Brittany play basketball for Oak Grove against Hattiesburg High.

"I'm just trying to get as far away from it as I can right now," Favre said. "I don't know if I'll ever know for sure (whether it's time to retire)."

Favre has played 16 seasons in the NFL, including the last 15 for the Packers.
