Ryan Grant Q&A

Running back hoping to get up to speed on offense by season opener

Ryan Grant literally got off the airplane in Green Bay and suited up just a few hours later in time for his first practice with the Green Bay Packers this afternoon. Grant was acquired by Green Bay on Saturday from the New York Giants in exchange for a pick in next year's NFL draft.

Grant will be competing for playing time against rookies Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn, and third-year pro Vernand Morency.

He took time after practice today to answer a few questions from PackerReport.com's Todd Korth:

Q: Is it realistic for you to learn this offense and play on Sunday against the Eagles?
Ryan Grant:
"I'm going to do everything I can, you know? I'm going to do everything I can to put myself in that position, but we'll see. That's up to the coaches. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure I'm available on Sunday."

Q: Are you familiar with this kind of zone blocking scheme?
"It's not totally foreign to me. Certain terms. It's been a while, but certain terms and stuff like that. To be honest with you, a lot of offenses have the same blocking scheme. It's just terminology, different jargon and different terms of what they're looking for. Once you get that down, you'll be OK."

Q: Had the Giants actually told you that you made the roster?
"Yes, I kind of got the heads up that I was in a good position to make it about a week, or two weeks before (Saturday). The things that they asked me to do on special teams kind of solidified the things I was doing and stuff like that. I kind of knew what was going on. My agent called me the day I made the team officially, but about 4:30, 5 o'clock, I got another phone call from Kevin Abrams and Jerry Reese and they told me about the situation.

"I respect the New York Giants organization. They did a lot for me the last two three years. I understand the business aspect. I wish them the best. I've got a lot of close buddies that I'm going to see in Week 2 (Sept. 16). Hopefully they won't do too well."

Q: Are you looking forward to that game already?
"I'm not really focusing on it, because there is a lot to focus on this week, but, yeah, that will be a special week."
