Manuel hooks on with Panthers

Safety was released by Packers in final cutdown on Saturday; Bodiford claimed by Redskins

Safety Marquand Manuel signed with the Carolina Panthers on Monday, two days after being released by Green Bay. Manuel was cut by Green Bay following a disappointing first season of a five-year, $10 million contract and replaced by second-year pro Atari Bigby.

The Panthers hope Manuel can rebound to contribute to one of the biggest areas of concern on the roster. With Mike Minter retiring early in training camp and Nate Salley battling a knee injury, the Panthers are entering the season with Chris Harris, who struggled in the preseason, and Deke Cooper as the likely Week 1 starters.

Manuel will return to Green Bay Nov. 18 when the Packers host the Panthers at Lambeau Field.

Wide receiver claimed by Redskins
Wide receiver/kick return specialist Shaun Bodiford was claimed on waivers by the Washington Redskins on Sunday, has learned.

Bodiford, who sustained a sprained knee while returning the game's opening kickoff Aug. 18 against Seattle, was released by the Packers on Saturday. The Redskins plan to use him to return punts and as a wideout.
