McCarthy opened his mid-week press conference today by listing 15 players who either were limited in practice, or did not practice at all. With AFC power San Diego (1-1) headed to Green Bay this Sunday, the Packers (2-0) need to enter the game as close to full power as possible to remain undefeated.
"We need to get healthy," said Packers coach Mike McCarthy. "That's the only thing I'm concerned about with our football team right now is our health."
The Packers normally practice in pads on the Wednesday before a Sunday game, but McCarthy opted to have the players go without pads and he also scaled back the practice because of the list of walking wounded. Here are the players who were limited in the team's practice today, or did not practice:
Limited participation in Wednesday's practice:
OT Chad Clifton (ankle)
DE/DE Cullen Jenkins (wrist)
DT Johnny Jolly (heel)
DE Aaron Kampman (rib)
OT Tony Moll (neck stinger)
RB Vernand Morency (knee)
S Aaron Rouse (hamstring)
G Jason Spitz (calf)
Did not participate in Wednesday's practice:
TE Bubba Franks (knee)
CB Al Harris (back)
WR Greg Jennings (hamstring)
DT Corey Williams (ankle)
CB Charles Woodson (hip)
DE Mike Montgomery (knee)
G Tony Palmer (neck)
The Packers' injured reserve list swelled to seven players last week when wide receiver Carlyle Holiday (knee) was shut down for the season.
In order to prevent injuries and ensure a complete recovery by his players, McCarthy gave the Packers each Wednesday off from practice during training camp. While the team won its first two games, players continue to deal with nagging injuries. Though seven players did not practice today, it is a good bet that all except Montgomery and Palmer will be ready to play on Sunday.
"Rest and recovery … I'm not going to give them any more rest, I can tell you that," McCarthy said. "We need to recover better."
McCarthy said that Jennings will test his sore hamstring tomorrow and practice with the team on Friday. Morency, who has been out since the first day of training camp, practiced on a limited basis today. If his patellar tendon recovers sufficiently tomorrow, there is a good chance that he may play against the Chargers.
"He had a limited participate practice, but we worked him as much as we could and we tried to get the other three guys ready," McCarthy said. "Tomorrow (Thursday morning), his medical review will be a factor on whether he goes this week or not."
If Morency sits out again, Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn and Ryan Grant again will share the load at running back.
