Starting center Scott Wells left practice with a side trunk injury, according to Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. Also called the torso, the trunk is composed of a number of muscles that flex and extend the spine. The torso transfers force, produces power, links the lower body to the upper and stabilizes. In all, the torso is the center of all body movement.
The extent of Wells' injury was not immediately known, but it is doubtful that he will participate in Saturday's afternoon practice and Sunday's intra-squad scrimmage at Lambeau Field.
Fourth-year pro Junius Coston stepped in for Wells with the first-team offense. While he was inconsistent with some of his shotgun snaps, he showed a good command of calling formations for the line and run-blocking, McCarthy said.
"Junius falls into that category of flexible," McCarthy said. "He can play guard and even some tackle. I think he's doing a good job."
Coston was playing with the second-team offense at center earlier in practice before Wells' injury.
A number of others did not practice due to nagging injuries or soreness. They included defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee), defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (hamstring), fullback Korey Hall (knee), cornerbacks Tramon Williams (hip flexor) and Will Blackmon (foot), defensive tackle Justin Harrell (back), running back DeShawn Wynn (concussion) and wide receiver Jake Allen (groin).
McCarthy said he is being extra cautious with Blackmon, who has had a history of injuries in the previous two seasons with his foot. Gbaja-Biamila, who had surgery in May on his knee, practiced on Wednesday night but was not able to recover in time for Friday's two practices.
"We're getting to that spot (in training camp)," McCarthy said. "We've been very fortunate until now with the injuries," McCarthy said. "This is what you have to get through (the weekend). We'll have a more balanced schedule next week."
The Packers open their preseason schedule on Aug. 11 at home against Cincinnati. The team practices Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) before conducting its annual Family Night intra-squad scrimmage on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. at Lambeau Field.
