Wells hopes to put bad back behind him

Second stint on the sideline, plus dreaded abdominal work, should do the trick, he says.

It's not so much his back that's bothering center Scott Wells as it is the rehab.

Along with a lot of cardio work to stay in shape, Wells is doing a lot of core training to strengthen the muscles in and around his back. That means working his abdominals, "which is not an area an offensive lineman likes to strengthen," Wells said with a smile.

Otherwise, Wells says he's on pace to be ready for the Sept. 8 opening showdown against rival Minnesota.

"I personally have no doubt," Wells said.

The fifth-year pro missed much of the first half of training camp with what coach Mike McCarthy called an injured trunk. Wells returned to practice and played in the third preseason game against San Francisco, but injured a muscle on the other side of his back midway through the first quarter.

"It's all related. Any time you have a back injury, if it's on one side, the other side compensates," Wells said in explaining that he didn't make a mistake by coming back too early. "So, if you overstress the other side, then that side gets hurt. It's one of those where we're going back and forth with the left and the right."

So, the training staff sidelined Wells again in hopes of getting Wells 100 percent healthy and to insure the injury isn't an ongoing concern.

Wells intends on practicing next week, when preparation starts for the Vikings.

"That's the plan," he said. "I've been out long enough. I was fighting to get back this week, which probably wasn't real smart on my part. I want to get back out on the field."

Wells insists he's not behind after barely practicing during training camp.

"I would be if I'm not able to practice next week," Wells said. "If I'm able to practice going into the game, I'll be fine."
