The Green Bay Packers today promoted cornerback Erwin Swiney from the practice squad to the teams' 53-man active roster to re-inforce the team's banged-up secondary.<p>
To make room for Swiney, the Packers released running back Maurice "Moe" Smith, who was signed to the team's roster less than two weeks ago.
Swiney, a rookie free agent from the University of Nebraska, had been on the practice squad since Oct. 30. He originally had been signed as a free agent April 26. Since the start of the season, Swiney has been on and off the Packers' practice squad and 53-man roster.
Cornerback Tod McBride was added to the team's injury report this week with a groin injury. Safety Darren Sharper and cornerback Tyrone Williams also have been battling nagging hamstring injuries.
Swiney will continue to wear jersey No. 26.
